Mental Disorder – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Sexual Dysfunction – Are They Related?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) refers to mental illness in which the individual has unwanted feelings or thoughts. One would feel for example that they would want to do a particular thing repeatedly. These thoughts would come suddenly and therefore interfere with the normal living of the individual. It may be the desire to watch sexual action such as through the pornographic materials.
The compulsive part of the disorder is observed in the person executing the feelings or thoughts. The actions are often short lived but because of the continuing cycle of obsessions and compulsions, the individual would feel compelled to repeat the action over and over again.
You may have observed someone with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in fear of contamination hence washing of hands several times, orderliness, closing of the door, worry about disaster and sexual experiences.
The desire for repeated sexual experience or thoughts is not limited to OCD. It is also observed in other disorders such as post traumatic stress disorder, sexual addiction and sexual dysfunction. This can be considered as part of general desire in life.
Patients with sexual obsession would want attach so much significance to it as they seek to remain attractive. Such as individual would therefore not be comfortable unless they are sure that they are completely accepted in by the people around him or her.
The Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that is related to sex also compels the person to be sure that they have been able to achieve or contribute to sexual satisfaction e partner. Such an individual would want to have repeated sex and several orgasms. They may even want to experience sexual pleasure from several other partners which puts them at risk of infections such as HIV and Hepatitis B.
Other socially ambiguous sexual behaviors such as pedophiles, lesbians and homosexuals have also been categorized as a result of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This is partly out of the sexual obsession that pushes the individual into seeking other sexual experiences other than the usual.
Other than sexual focus and the desire for more experiences, the person with OCD may also engage in self doubt. This includes uncertainty as to whether certain action has been taken satisfactorily or not. There would be an urge to repeat such actions. Such as person may also be frequently making and breaking relationships out of self doubt as to whether they are really in the correct relationship.
The common treatment for this is the use of antidepressants; the challenge is however misdiagnosis as the problem is not well described in literature.
